Blood in the skin and subcutaneous tissues causes bruising that changes color and can take two weeks to resolve. The IV puncture seals over 48 hours but if bacteria gained entry, infection will cause redness, swelling, fever, pus formation, and increasing pain. Wet warm compresses, twice a day will help. If no infection the tenderness and redness will decrease daily and will be gone in a week.
