A member asked:

My dogs killed a baby woodchuck. a few minutes after i grabbed one of their collars which touched her (kind of damp) fur and i have a scab on my finger. could i get rabies from this? i dont think the woodchucks saliva could be on it but im scared?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

I expect you washed your hands immediately. The contact drew your attention to the scab. There is possibility of bacterial infection if there was a break in the skin however I would suggest to just be patient and positive. Seek care if any concerning symptoms like fever or change in the area of contact. Health dept may be able to tell you if the local woodchuck are positive for rabies.
