Cramps could be for various reasons: including imbalance of body minerals like calcium, magnesium and sodium movement in muscle action. It may be because of activities without resting the muscles. It may be due to nerve irritation. The minerals lost in sweat, diarrhea or vomiting if not replaced appropriately may cause the mineral imbalance. Seek medical evaluation if it persists.

There is a sleep disorder called Restless Leg Syndrome that classically wakes people from sleep with severe calf pain
