All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. ESR normal range for men is typically 0 - half age of the man. Thus, for 40 y.o. man, normal ESR would be 0 - 20. ESR is also influenced by lifestyle factors (physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption) and common metabolic abnormalities such as obesity. Many conditions cause elevated ESR, most are inflammatory or infectious. However, ESR alone is not diagnostic of a disease.
