In reference to a chest x-ray. what does bibasilar patchy opacities likely atelectatic change mean?

It suggests the person did not take a deep enough breath before the x-ray was taken to equal that of standard x-rays. It does not suggest a disease process.

"Bibasilar" refers to both lung bases (bottom most portions). "Patchy opacities", means there are some small scattered areas that appear a little brighter (or less dark) than the normally, darker, lung tissue typically seen. "Atelectatic change" means the reason for these changes is likely related to lung tissue not fully expanded by air. It tends to be more common with compression at lung bases.
