Likely, your saliva goes to the airway rather than the food pipe during sleep. Change your head position with a different pillow may correct the problem.

Bronchospasm may worsen at night and a pulmonary function test with and without a bronchodilator may be helpful in determining the cause of the cough. Avoid dust, mold, allergic triggers and smoke exposure. Keep linens and pillow clean and washed in hot water. If you have congestion or a runny nose, nasal saline is often helpful in reducing post nasal drip. Watch for wheezing, chest tightness.
