I have genital herpes and im pre diabetic. im not on antivirals but ive notice whenever im taking my metformin consistently, i get prodrome symptoms and maybe an outbreak. ive tested it and im pretty sure its the metformin. what should i do?

You don't describe your prodrome symptoms, but except immunosuppressive drugs, no known drugs cause prodrome or increase HSV reactivation, including metformin. I would advise continuing metformin and see the doc who manages your herpes ASAP with the next possible outbreak to confirm what's going on. Or if not on HSV suppression, start on valacyclovir or acyclovir to see if it makes a difference.

Most people with pre diabetes never develop type 2 diabetes, so if you're at low risk for developing type 2 diabetes & you think metformin is a problem for you, your MD may approve of stopping it and emphasize proper diet and regular.exercise. Of course you'll still have follow-up labs including HgbA1c's performed.
