Without direct trauma to the finger, holding an item which may slip from your grasp, causing a sudden lunge to reestablish grip, may twist or overextend a finger, causing a sprain to the ligaments holding the segments of the three parts of the finger in line. This results in swelling of the ligaments, with consequent difficulty in bending the digit w/o pain and failure to completely flex it.
