Is this correct? syphilis only transmissable after chancre appears. test will be positive 1-2 weeks after chancre. if partner tested neg 5 weeks after we hooked up then i'm fine as her test would be +ve by this point if she had it & was contagious?

Generally true, but there are exceptions. It takes up to 8 weeks (maybe even 12 weeks on rare occasions) for syphilis blood tests to turn positive.
