While we can forget an unpleasant experience or piece of information, it's not healthy. This is the mechanism that explains post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). After a horrible experience, the brain can suppress certain details or even substitute a false detail as a defense against re-experiencing the memory. The goal of therapy for PTSD is to retrieve the true memory and process it normally.
