The entire lab test needs to be seen and the entire clinical picture needs to be considered. Some questions come from focusing on looking at one data peice in a lab. The medical opinion comes from considering many factors. In general, a low rdw sd value is not of any concern alone and indicates that red blood cells are produced with little variation.

A "low" RDW is not abnormal. It just means that your red cells are all of similar size. If your hemoglobin is normal, do not give the low RDW a second thought.
