The Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine can help a person develop protective antibodies to any of the strains they have never been infected with. It does not treat or cure past HPV infection. Those infected by a strain of HPV do not pass it back and forth as if it were a strep throat. A person retains that HPV strain in their tissues in a dormant state by 2 years after initial infection.
