A member asked:

How would you treat high blood pressure caused by benzodiazepine withdrawal? sometimes as high as 150/100 spikes. is propanolol a good treatment? when will the blood pressure go back too normal after benzo discontinuation after 4 years of daily use?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Beta blockers are a good choice if your resting heart rate is rapid ( over 80). Otherwise I feel that a better first line treatment would be ACE inhibitor or calcium channel blocker combined with a low dose longacting diuretic. Low salt diet, good weight, no smoking, regular exercise, good sleep, no excess caffeine & alcohol are important. Withdrawal symptoms should subside after a couple of weeks.
