A member asked:

Drinking liquid and was aspirated into the windpipe does it cause aspiration pneumonia? could it cause secondary drowning?

It is not all aspiration of liquids that results in pneumonia, quite often the windpipe is able to clear it back in coughing out mucous and there are membrane activities that pushes out what ever does not belong unless the mechanism is overwhelmed. Aspiration pneumonia could occur if the protective and the corrective measure is overwhelmed.

With a normal cough reflex aspiration pneumonia is not likely. When the cough reflex is impaired, such as in intoxications or weakness for example, pneumonitis becomes possible due to inability to clear airways properly.
