Balanced diet: A balanced diet and regular exercise are far more important than supplements. Unless you have an underlying illness which may make you prone to developing deficiency of one or more nutrients, a well balanced diet is all you need.

Supplements don't: You increase body mass & strength by doing resistance related exertion that triggers muscle growth. Good basic nutrition will support muscle growth, but if you do not do the weight training, isometrics or other such efforts any extra nutrient or supplement will end up as pee, poop or fat.
