Niacin is not the recommended drug for cholesterol lowering. There are side effects such as flushing, tachycardia, itching, hepatitis etc. If you have high cholesterol please seek the advice of your physician for dietary and other treatment. Statins have been used for a number of years and have been shown to be effective. I wish you good luck.

Niacin, especially at such a low dose, can be taken indefinitely if you tolerate the flushing and develop no liver enzyme abnormalities. It can aggravate diabetes by raising blood sugar so most avoid prescribing it for diabetic patients. As has been stated, the statins are much more effective in lowering cholesterol & LDL.
