A member asked:

I had protected vaginal sex with a girl. but she is hiv2 positive.(not on treatment) i tested negative on 30 and 43 day by hiv 4th gen duo test dr told me hiv2 takes longer to be detected. is my negative status is confirmed or i need further testing?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

a study showed that 99% of people who will become HIV positive do so by 45 days after HIV exposure. Therefore, your negative test at 43 days is very reassuring. One more 4th generation test at any time after 45 days should provide slightly more reassurance; the longer you wait for the last test, the more conclusive it will be.
