Episodes of atrial fibrillation can be intermittent, and am aware of isolated infrequent events in some patients. Most folks do require a cardiology evaluation at the time of the first event and close followup. Repetitive events will likely require therapeutic interventions.

Paroxysmal a fib is characterized by self limited episodes that may last minutes to days that revert to normal heart activity without a specific intervention. Commonly seen in practice and confusing as many times patients are back to regular heart activity at the time they are examined.
