You need to see a doctor while you are experiencing the shortness of breath to determine if you have any physical signs of a condition that can lead to shortness of breath, like asthma. If you only feel short of breath when you think about it, then it is more likely to be due to anxiety. You may need further testing to determine the etiology so see a doctor ASAP to get a diagnosis and treatment.

The simplest way to resolve this issue is to have your doctor evaluate you. The fact that you are short of breath "when it is on your mind" suggests that there is no significant problem. Please have your doctor evaluate you. Good luck.

It is not feasible to provide an opinion without additional history, physical examination may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor to see if you may be depressed. Depression is treatable. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. Wish you good health!
