If the death is suspicious, the medical examiner or coroner will usually do an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Since a death from COVID is not suspicious and the cause is known, no autopsy is indicated.

Majority are not referred for autopsy for medical reasons. If the cause is believed to be questionable or for legal reasons the medical team or family may request an autopsy.
