Dermoid cysts (usually benign teratoma's, histologically) can contain a variety of hormonally active constituents of the dermus. They are caused by "cellular rests" which have the potential to affect other body functions. B/c of the potential for malignancy, such cysts are generally removed via laparoscopic surgery.
