A member asked:

Cervix closed after partial/subtotal hysterectomy. has to be closed to uterine body right? or pregnancy can occur with ovaries left in place. i get conflicted answers. why when cervix removed, its a cuff added but nothing is done when cervix remains?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

When the cervix is totally removed, then the vaginal walls are re-sutured to close the vagina also known as the vaginal "cuff". When the cervical "stump" is left in place the vagina is not left "open" because the cervix is still in place.. The remaining cervical "stump" can still become cancerous in the future and pap smears may still need to be done post sub-total hysterectomy.
