It's rare. At any point in time, probably under one person in a million has herpetic whitlow. Your massage worker almost certainly didn't have it. And there has never been a report of HSV infection transmitted by massage, with or without whitlow (not counting cases when the massage turned sexual with herpes transmitted by kissing, intercourse, or oral sex). This isn't anything to be worried about.
