Cysts in the ovaries are fairly common. More than 90% of them are benign and rarely grow in size. The cysts do not harm the normal gland functions of the ovary such as Hormone production and production of ova for fertility function. A follow up with Ultrasound once or twice a year is advised to check on the size of the ovaries/cysts.

True "polycystic ovarian disease" (PCOD) will result in lack of ovulation, leading to very irregular bleeding episodes related to the constant estrogen production from your ovaries. If your ultrasound shows multiple ovarian cysts, but your periods are regular and you are ovulating, this is sometimes a normal variant. Ask your GYN physician about oral bcp's, which will stop ovarian function.
