I have a gash on my leg and the skin over the wound has turned white. there is no discharge of any kind, but the area surrounding the wound is red. will this heal on it's own, or is it infected to the point that i need to see a doctor?

You didn't mention how big the gash is, or how long it has been there, or whether it is painful. I would play it safe and see a physician for proper management, because if it isn't treated properly, at very best you could end up with a nasty scar.
