This amount is a common dosage for those treated for vitamin D deficiency. Many cite 4000 iu as the safe dose when vitamin D blood levels are normal. I don't see any problems taking it while breast feeding.

After taking 5000 units/day for three months to correct any deficiency, reduce the dose to 4000 units/day.
