A member asked:

Tested negative for strep, rapid and throat culturebeen sick for a week and a half now, its getting better but, its so much like strep, very sore throat, no cough, ear congestion, headache? did they do the test wrong? should i take antibiotics?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Most sore throats that last that long are caused by viruses, but other bacteria besides Streptococcus can cause a sore throat. I doubt that they did the Strep test wrong, but they may not have tested for other bacteria. Go back to your doctor and get reexamined. Do not take antibiotics unless they find a specific bacteria, because antibiotics have no effect on viruses.
