You can have this infection with no obvious symptoms with an initial contagious phase for a couple years. Then it will go dormant and may never cause problems or trigger the changes leading to cervical cancer years or decades later. Periodic pap smears will often detect any pre-cancerous changes long before cancer would occur. There are no associated warts or obvious lesions with this strain.
