Shortness of breath (SOB) or dyspnea is usually associated with high respiratory (breathing) rate. At rest, normal breathing rate is 15 breaths/minute (bpm). If rate is more than 20 bpm you have mild shortness of breath and if rate is above 30 you have moderate shortness of breath. People may describe SOB as an intense tightening in the chest, air hunger, difficulty breathing, or breathlessness.
