Caffeine does not cause schizophrenia or brain damage. A high dose of 500 mg of caffeine was shown to increase tension, nervousness, anxiety, excitement, irritability, nausea, paresthesia, tremor, perspiration, palpitations, restlessness and possibly dizziness. It is less likely that with daily use of caffeine you can reach the high, sub-lethal dose (7-10 mg/kg).

Drinking coffee neither causes or worsens schizophrenia. There are thought to be multiple causes of the disease such as viral and genetic. The smartest thing to do is to get on a medication that works for you and STAY on it! Good luck to you!

Although caffeine at high dose does cause the multiple effects listed by Dr. Le, there is no evidence that the temporary brain chemical alteration could result in any long term deleterious effect. There is no relationship with caffeine and schizophrenia.
