A member asked:

Abuting vs. compressing. left vertebral artery, dominant, elongated abuting brain stem. radiologist said abuting rather than compressing and so not to worry. surely contact with the brain stem is something to worry about?

Abutting brain stem just means the artery borders the brain stem, not compressing it so there is nothing to concern.

Abuting means contacting or touching the artery, and compressing would image as indenting or squeezing. Would not fret about this, as unlikely to cause any neurological symptoms.
