An infection is more likely to cause unilateral tonsillar swelling with a coating. Discuss a culture with your physician. Watch for signs of fever and difficulty swallowing.

Acid reflux is highly irritant and is known to cause cancer in the esophagus, it can predispose you to a chronic response and should the throat be involved then leukoplakia is a possibility. Luekoplakia is considered a precancerous condition. An alergic response can also produce Leukoplakia. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1469757/
