The NIH-funded DPPOS study showed that 8% of patients with "pre-diabetes" have diabetic retinopathy. Blurred vison caused by 1. refractive changes can be addressed with normalized glucose and/or refraction, 2. cataracts by cataract surgery, 3. macular edema by intravitreal medications or laser, 4. vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachments by vitrectomy surgery.
