When everything looks a bit yellow to you or you cannot drive at night due to lights blinding you are good clues. I would follow the Drs advice. When I had mine done it was like getting a new iPhone screen and I can drive at night. But everyone is different. Discuss.

Your doctor will examine your eyes and will dilate your pupils to view the cataract as well as the back of the eye, your retina. Cataract surgery is an elective procedure. It really depends upon if you’re finding that you are having difficulty doing the things that you enjoy doing on a daily basis. Cataract surgery can be done early or it can be done later but it really depends upon your own needs

Cataracts are just your own lens that was clear when you were born but has now become cloudy. It is analogous to having a scratched or opaque lens on your camera. It doesn't harm your camera to have a scratched lens, it just take as good a picture. You determine the time to change your camera lens or have cataract surgery by the quality of the picture and what your visual needs are. No rush.
