How long does swimmers' ear usually last and how is it treated?

"Swimmer's ear" is another name for otitis externa, i.e. infection of the ear canal. As the name suggests, it can occur after swimming or otherwise getting water in the ears, but most cases don't involve water exposure at all. Hello. As described, having your ear examined is important for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Wax can occlude the ear canal and cause the water to accumulate. It often times must be cleaned for resolution. A culture can prove to save time and direct best medical therapy. The view inside your ear may show fungus which will not respond to antibiotics. See your ENT doc for confirmation.
