HCG is produced by the placenta in pregnancy. HCG varies between 25 mIU/mL and 7500 mIU/mL during the first 5 weeks. It differs in each pregnancy. An HCG of 43 means that you might be pregnant. If you check again in one week and see the HCG is up past 43, it may confirm an early pregnancy. No change or below 5 means that you are not pregnant.

A 43 is a positive pregnancy test. A negative test would be less than or equal to 4. In a normal pregnancy HCG levels double every 2 to 3 days, so doing serial tests will tell you fairly quickly if this looks to be a viable pregnancy. This needs to be followed up in either case.
