I may not agree with use of term normal for intubation, however sometimes the extent of the pneumonia may prevent the lungs from being able to provide enough oxygen for the body may be the cause of intubation. It is possible to have pneumonia, especially at that age, without fever. Recovery is possible. If you are able to, surround the person with Love.

Such circumstances are challenging and while hoping for the best, preparing for the worst would be appropriate. Many factors are to be taken into consideration in a prognosis discussion. Between recovery and dying, becoming dependent on a ventilator is a situation that is feared the most. The palliative care team at the hospital may be able to provide more information and support.
