Group B strep is a common component of the digestive tract and often found transiently in a vaginal culture. It occasionally triggers a UTI, but when symptom free does not always require treatment. If it is Group B strep it can cause problems for a newborn delivered while it is present in the vagina. In pregnancy they routinely check near the time of birth.
