Well aerated lung tissues appears darker on chest x-rays than the boney ribs/back/heart which appear lighter. When the normally darker areas appear light, it means there is more density which would be caused by fluid and germs. Add the x-ray abnormality to a history of fever & cough or other symptoms and the pneumonia diagnosis is used. In some cases it can be diagnosed on exam.
