One possibility is recurrent corneal erosion where a patch of corneal epithelium (surface cells) comes off and sticks to your eyelid when you first open the eye then quickly heals. Allergic irritation, referred pain from a pinched occipital nerve at the top of your neck where it meets the skull. Corneal erosions can be prevented by applying 5% sodium chloride gel to the eye at bedtime.
