A member asked:

Does the risk of a hemorrhagic stoke go up if the patient is taking a blood thinner (eliquis) and also has a dva? or is the risk about the same and if so, what is the increased risk, percentage wise?

The risk of hemorrhagic strokes in patients taking Eliquis has been estimated at 0.33%, not significantly higher than other agents. I do not know what you mean by DVA. On the whole if there is an indication for anticoagulant use, risk of hemorrhagic stroke is not higher with Eliquis.

The anticoagulant is present to prevent a thrombotic or embolic blood clot. Eliquis, on its own, is highly unlikely to cause bleeding, but if a stroke were to occur and bleeding subsequently were to occur at that site, the bleeding might be a bit more vigorous, due to the modification of clotting secondary to the Eliquis.
