A member asked:

I have acute gastritis. when it flares up, it hits hard and is very painful. i have been given an acid blocker for a week to treat this. however, i've heard of severe acid rebound when going off them. will this happen to me? or is a week too little?

Minimize triggers like spicy foods, caffeine,alcohol,nicotine,aspirin,anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen or naproxen, stress. Severe gastritis may need treatment for a few weeks, then taper off them slowly to avoid rebound. If it's a ppi you're taking, you can switch to famotidine for a week or so afterward. A gastroenterologist can advise you as needed.
