Eczema: The exact cause of atopic dermatitis (eczema) is unknown, but it's likely due to a combination of dry, irritable skin with a malfunction in the body's immune system. Stress & other emotional disorders can worsen but don't cause it. Many believe it is genetic. It most often begins in childhood before age 5 & may persist into adulthood. For some, it flares periodically and then subsides.
