Treating each genital herpes outbreak isn't very effective: it takes 2-3 days for acyclovir or valacyclovir to start to work, and by then the outbreak often is starting to clear up anyway. Ask your doctor about daily suppressive treatment to prevent outbreaks, which also reduces transmission risk. For now, keep taking the pills, and also try an OTC anesthetic ointment like lidocaine. Good luck.
