Passing blood rectally is abnormal and requires investigation by a physician. In the absence of abnormal bowel movements&with fresh appearing red blood, bleeding from hemorrhoids would be a likely cause. Also, marathon runners are thought to have rectal bleeding after a long race caused by dehydration and/or diversion of circulation away from the intestinal tract resulting in transient damage
