The initial blood test for a neural tube defect in pregnancy is not diagnostic. The next step is to ask your OB gyn to schedule a diagnostic ultrasound. If there is any question about the results or if they are inconclusive, an amniocentesis can verify if the baby has a neural tube deficit.

I assume that you are pregnant and you tested positive for a neural tube defect in your fetus. You need to be followed by your OB and need to have an ultrasound or even MRI of your fetus. Based on that finding, your OB will consult a fetal neurosurgeon to give you better advice as to whether there is a concern. Definitely do not ignore this or postpone seeing your OB.
