Your immune system will start to fight an infection when you become infected, no need to waste all those resources if you're not infected.

Your immune system cannot detect what hasn't been in contact with the SARS-COV2 coronavirus. Once your immune system detects the foreign protein, either from the virus or the vaccine, it starts the machinery to fight off infection, which on repeat exposure includes antibodies.
