I was given a gi cocktail in the er. they said it was maalox, lidocaine and donnatal in it. they did not tell me to stop breastfeeding. did these medicines harm my child? its been a week and i never stopped breastfeeding? donnatal seems scary?

Clinically significant amounts of the medications in the "gi cocktail" are unlikely to occur in breast milk to influence your nursing infant. See/call your pediatrician for reassurance.

These meds are designed to work locally and very tiny amounts actually reach your blood stream. Then, none of these meds are significantly excreted into breast milk, so between low blood levels and low excretion, no way enough got to baby to cause ANY problems. Relax and continue breastfeeding.Stay away from caffeine, increase water intake, see GI doc about alternative ways to treat heartburn...
