For a few months now, my bp has been elevated. i take 50mgs of toprol daily. its like its not working anymore. ive been on it 17 years for svt and hbp. pulse is fine but bp just wont go back to 110/78. what can cause it? i have a low sodium diet?

Hypertension gets worse with age, especially the systolic (upper) number. If you blood pressure is hovering around 120/80 it should be fine. Besides low salt diet, exercise can lower blood pressure around 5%. If your heart rate is not low, dose of Toprol can be increased to 75 or 100 mg to keep BP less than 120/80. If high dose does not work, I would add a small dose of thiazide diuretic.
