My optometrist has been unable to correct the vision in my left eye to 20/20, however i can see 20/20 through a pinhole spectacle. regarding higher order aberrations do they ever disappear/resolve or do they tend to get worse with time?

Pin hole is the means to determine if there is uncorrected refractive (eyeglass) needs. A second opinion might be in order here with your ophthalmologist who could figure out the correct number. Unless you have had previous injury or surgery for that eye, higher order aberrations are extraordinarily rare.
